Just the Few of Us…

I just finished reading Rusell Shorto’s “Childless Europe” cover story in the NYTimes magazine. I don’t know what it says about me—maybe that it’s time for me to take a vacation from New York City—but I find the idea of a country with fewer people appealing. A little extra space, a little extra time, patterns changing in unexpected ways. I’m feeling more relaxed just thinking about it. Even if everyone were in nursing homes for a while, and it was strange for the young. I think that kind of lull could be creative for a society. And I think birthrates would adjust upwards on their own, in good time. It seems crazy to try to force it.
